Submission Guidelines

We’re always interested in seeing book proposals for Southwest food and folklore.

If you’re writing a book you think will fit into our list, we’d love to receive a book proposal from you. We accept proposals online at pueblopub@aol.com. Put “Book Proposal” and the title of your book in the subject line. Include all content in the body of the email. We don’t open attachments until we get to know you better.

For your initial query, please send us an author/book bio telling us   who you are and what your book is about. Include a selling handle   for your book (25-word description), an overview (which resembles a back cover blurb), an annotated table of contents, and a preliminary promotion plan of how you can help to market your book. Let us know if you have a blog or a website already in place (we’ll require this later in the publishing process).

If you’re sending a query for a cookbook, tell us what makes your cookbook special… why it’s unique and how it’s different from the millions of other cookbooks out there. Include the theme/story line.

If you’re sending a query for fiction, please be aware that we only contract on completed manuscripts. Include a short synopsis in your proposal.

If you’re sending a query for nonfiction, we’re open to anything that fits within the parameters of our list. We’re especially interested in titles that relate to Southwest shamanism, Native American arts and crafts (such as weaving and dream catchers), myths and legends from the Land of Enchantment, and tall tales (true or untrue) from Texas.

If you’re not sure that the book you’re writing will be right for us, just send us a quick email describing your project and we’ll let you know if we’d like to see an expanded query.

It goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway. Please make sure your query is the best it can be before you hit the send button.   If your query has typos or if you send us a query about a book that clearly doesn’t fit our list, we’ll send it back to you with a very short “not interested” note. :(

If we’re interested, we’ll ask you to send us a full proposal. :)

Are we right for one another?

Here’s a little bit more about us so you can see if we’d be the right publisher for you. We publish POD (print-on-demand). Our major online retailer is Amazon. We’re distributed to the bookstore trade by Baker & Taylor and New Leaf. We’re represented to libraries by Quality Books and Unique Books. We are NOT a subsidy publisher–you don’t pay us to get published; we pay you royalties on book sales.

We don’t offer an advance but we do offer a generous royalty of 20% of net sales (the industry standard is 10% net, so we double that).   We actively market our books, both online and by sending out press releases, review copies, and arranging online book tours as well as local author appearances. We promote the heck out of our books and we expect you to actively help promote your book. During the process of publishing a book with us, we help you set up a web presence and develop an author platform if you don’t already have one. We also link to you and give you access to this site where you can write posts and promote your book on our pages.

There are no guarantees in publishing; we make no promises other than to publish a book you’ll be proud of and to do our very best to market it. If you want to sell millions of copies and become a world-famous author, that will depend a lot on you, but we can give you a really good start. :)
