Cinco de Mayo Margaritas
Cinco de Mayo (fifth of May) is celebrated the first weekend in May at many places around the city. Commemorating the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, this day is observed as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Filled with fun, food, and festivities, the official drink of the day is Margaritas.
1 lime, divided
Kosher salt
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 5 limes)
2 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1 lemon)
1 cup Triple Sec
3 cups crushed ice, divided
1 cup white tequila
Cut the lime in half. With the first half, rub the outside rims of six glasses with the cut lime. Slice the second half and set aside.
Dip the rim of each glass into a plate of Kosher salt to coat the rims.
Put the lime juice, lemon juice, Triple Sec, and 2 cups ice in a blender. Blend until completely combined.
Add the tequila and blend for 2 more seconds.
Place the remaining ice in the salted glasses. Pour in the margarita and garnish with a slice of lime.
Serves 6
Variation: For a Frozen Margarita, blend with 3 cups ice just until slushy. Garnish with a slice of lime.
